<p class="Paragraph">You can choose between various types (Left, Right, Centered or Decimal), and can specify a leader character to precede the tab. <help:switch select="Program" xmlns:help="http://openoffice.org/2000/help"><help:case select="WRITER">Alternatively, you can use your mouse to set the tab stops in the <help:link Id="67570">Ruler</help:link>, although this method is not as precise.</help:case></help:switch></p>
<p class="Paragraph"><help:help-text value="visible" xmlns:help="http://openoffice.org/2000/help">Here you can view and edit the self-defined tab stops for the current paragraph or Paragraph Style. If no tabs have been defined, the program will use default tabs set at every inch.</help:help-text> The first tab you set will remove any default tabs on the left.</p>
<p class="Paragraph">Define the tab position here. For example, you can set a tab of 2 cm by typing 2, <span class="T1">2 cm</span> or <span class="T1">2 cm</span>. For a tab of 1 inch enter 1". Instead of pressing Enter after entering a value, as this will close the dialog, click <span class="T1">New</span> in order to define additional tabs or specify options such as the type and leader.</p>
<p class="Paragraph">This list box displays all defined tab stops. You can select each individual tab stop to modify the type or leader, or to clear it.</p>

<p class="Paragraph">This is where you change the type of the tab currently selected in the <span class="T1">Position</span> area.</p>
<p class="Paragraph"><help:help-text value="visible" xmlns:help="http://openoffice.org/2000/help">The default is a left tabulator.</help:help-text> It aligns text and numbers to the left.</p>
<p class="Paragraph"><help:help-text value="visible" xmlns:help="http://openoffice.org/2000/help">A right tabulator aligns text and numbers to the right.</help:help-text></p>
<p class="Paragraph"><help:help-text value="visible" xmlns:help="http://openoffice.org/2000/help">A centered tabulator aligns text and numbers to the horizontal center.</help:help-text></p>
<p class="Paragraph"><help:help-text value="visible" xmlns:help="http://openoffice.org/2000/help">A decimal tab aligns text to the left while numbers will be formatted according to the position of the decimal sign.</help:help-text> A number (or a word) with a decimal point will be aligned so that the point is exactly at the tab.</p>
<p class="Paragraph"><help:switch select="System" xmlns:help="http://openoffice.org/2000/help"><help:case select="WIN">The decimal separator depends on the country setting defined in the control panel, where you can also change it.</help:case></help:switch></p>
<p class="Paragraph"><help:help-text value="visible" xmlns:help="http://openoffice.org/2000/help">Specify a character for the decimal tab here.</help:help-text> The default is a period. You can also use other characters, for example, degrees or umlauts. Depending on your operating system and the character set you are using, the period tab can be incorrectly formated if opening and closing this type of document.</p>
<p class="Paragraph">Here you can choose the leader you want inserted before the tab selected under <span class="T1">Position</span> - as long as no other text appears there.</p>

<p class="Paragraph"><help:help-text value="visible" xmlns:help="http://openoffice.org/2000/help">You can also define a special character to be used as a leader.</help:help-text></p>
<p class="Paragraph"><help:help-text value="visible" xmlns:help="http://openoffice.org/2000/help">Click <span class="T1">New</span> to add the defined tab to the list in the <span class="T1">Position</span> box.</help:help-text> The <span class="T1">New</span> button becomes active as soon as you enter a new value in the <span class="T1">Position</span> field.</p>
<p class="Paragraph"><help:help-text value="visible" xmlns:help="http://openoffice.org/2000/help">Click here to clear all tabs listed under <span class="T1">Position</span>.</help:help-text> The default tab will then be valid (<span class="T1"> left, no leader, 1"</span>).</p>
